The typical unix/linux technique is to copy the whole disk off somewhere
else (_carefully_) with something like dd (and appropriate options to
replace anything unreadable with empty sectors), and then try to mount
it (eg, via a loopback file system if you copied the disk into a file on
another disk) and extract what files you can.

This is not for the faint hearted, or uninitiated.  And you should
definitely be working on a copy of the data rather than the raw data as
much as possible.

If the data really matters to you, and you don't have backups of it, you
might be better paying someone who does data recovery for a living.
