[wellylug] debian - nameserver problem

On debian (woody), I can not get netscape to retrieve webpages.

The modem connection [to Paradise] works fine and I can ping remote IP 
numbers.  But when I try to fetch webpages with Netscape, I get a message to 
the effect that the host is unknown and that I should consider pointing a 
$socks_ns environmental variable at a name server.

Any advice?
