"none seem to work"
I guess that was kinda vague :-)
I am using debian woody, debian has nethack-gnome nethack-qt,
nethack-x11 packages. I have installed/run all but nethack-qt (I have
always assumed, possibly incorrectly, that qt was to do with kde and I
have removed kde from my system to save space) and literally nothing
happens, well almost nothing, the drive usually runs for a second but
thats it.
I haven't tried running it from the console to see what (if anything)
the application returns as I thought I would just go "old-skool" and
play the text version.
Then the keyboard problem became interesting and kind of diverted my
attention.
If I can't find a way to play the text version I'll go back and fiddle
until one of the 'pretty' version works :-)
