I've just went through Mr. Carr suggestion:

1. Checking the modem: it is a HSF 56k HSFi Modem; the kernel of mandrake is 2.4.21-0.13mdk. Downloaded the hsflinmodem driver from linuxant for the corespond kernel.

2. I renamed the driver into "hsflinmodem.rpm" burned into cd (doing that under windows).

Try to install the driver ;Turn on my mandrake; Going to Mandrake Control Center

3 Open the Console (Is it similar as the terminal? )

4.On the localhost... type su -
it says local host/root (forget..) and try to type ..
cd rpm -i hsfmodem driver etc. ...finally all failed..

I'm wandering whether:

1. Steps 1 or 2 is wrong
2. Mr Carr (or anyone else), please provide me with more details on step 4

3. Regarding this..."Buy a proper 56K hardware external modem - you'll remember the quality long after the price...!", what sort of modem suggested?

Many thanks,
Kadim
