yes i am aware, and i override it by mkisofs all the time :)

afaik the original iso9660 spec supposed to be 8.3 filenames, so people
started building extensions on top of it, like rock-ridge and joliet

I haven't seen many directory structures going deeper than 255 chars/8
dir levels :)

anyway I've backed the thing up before, "mirrored" onto CD's, but I had to
drop down to single user mode and do it "by hand", selecting files in 640mb portions
to make iso's. I'm looking for a way to do it automatically, without
interaction.
