Thanks for the pointer Sam! 
Had a quick look at the spec at
http://www.verbatim.com.au/products/productdetail.cfm?ID=KW2580N4 and it
lists it as USB2 Hi-Speed with a speed 40 times higher than USB 1.1 so
it seems safe to me that it will actually be a 'real' USB2 card (as it
will go up to 480 Mbps). 
If it turns out not to be I should be able to return it anyway!
My main concern is if there would be any issues getting it to work under
Linux.
