what sort of battery is it? If the cells are NiCad then you have to
fully discharge them every time to maintain a decent battery life,
otherwise you get poor performance as you experience.
You may want to remove the battery and fully discharge it through low
impedence high wattage resistor say 10x 100ohm 5w resistors in parallel
should do it. Just be careful for with the resistros as they will get
quite hot.
