DON'T DO THIS, it will wreck the battery if any of the cells drop below 0v
and hence get reverse charged.
Disconnect the load when the voltage drops to ~80% of rated.
I use car light bulbs as for dummy loads with a relay the disconnect when
the voltage drops.
I imagine the laptop has built in cutout to protect the battery.

Does the warrantee cover the battery?

If the battery is a Lithium-Ion battery, They have quite finicky charging
requirements so the problem my be with the charger. Reread the manuals to be
sure you are treating it correctly.
