Given the "Mobile" in the subject line, I'm surprised that rack-mount is an
option.
The cheapest I'm aware of is this unit, about $1400+GST plus drives/cpu/ram.
Not really suitable for multimedia though. Things like good sound & graphics
are not part of a typical 1U server.
1U P4 Rackmount Barebone Server
*1x Easy Swap bay
*2x ATA133 Raid 0,1 Hot swap bays
*1x Slim Floppy
*1x Slim 24x CDROM
*Intel 845E Chipset
*533FSB
*2xDDR Angle Slot (max.2GB)
*1xPCI 32bit/33MHz
*ATi Rage XL 8MB graphics on board
*Promise PDC20276 Dual ATA133 Raid
*Dual Intel 82550PM Lan
*Wake on LAN
*2xUSB
Also see Procase, who sell direct to the public & have a good range of all
sorts of PC cases, http://www.procase.co.nz/
note they they have flexible PCI/AGP riser adaptors so that standard boards can
be fitted & have some slots available. I'd be surprised if you'll get 8xAGP
working properly with such a beast though. It can be a good way to build your
own dual cpu server at a good price though.
The other one I'll toss in here is the MSI mega box, see
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/slim_pc/slm/pro_slm_detail.php?UID=431
for details. It pretty much fits what Jamie was talking about, but has some
(IMHO) design flaws, & I think some better designed/engineered solutions are
out there.
I think I'd be more comfortable moving this discussion to the wlug forums
rather than keeping it here, as I can see hardware options & prices being
tossed around/discussed, which may still be of interest to others, but this
isn't the place.
Cheers
Brent
