I use MythTV for my PVR, and I've been very pleased with it.

Running a combined frontend/backend on a Shuttle SN41G2, XP 1800+,
SAA7134-based capture card, and a GF3 Ti 200 in the AGP slot (since I
disliked the onboard video of the SN41G2, couldn't get overscan)

Encoding load of 325x576 (Half D1) @ 2200kbit MPEG-4 is 20%.

I'd half recommend the SN41G2. It's quiet enough (has a 200G 7200RPM
spindle, which doesn't help..), it has just enough slots to get by, and
the form-factor for sitting among other TV gear is close enough (full
HT-style cases are quite expensive). But the overscan with the onboard
GF4MX didn't work at all, which really annoyed me. And, you're looking at
binary-only drivers for the NIC under 2.4.x (tho, the reverse engineered
drivers in 2.6 are fine..)

Might be better with a different Shuttle box, and/or other cases and
boards.
