I agree that Gentoo is a brilliant option, but as stated I want a totally
seperate machine to install it on (jsut in case).

I think you've missed the point of what I was saying.

Until Linux can be as easy to use, manage and setup as Windows it is not
going to make much of an inroad into businesses and home users.
