The real problem is the small hard disk. Get a larger hard disk, and you
could use it as a webserver, firewall, mp3 server, etc.

Distro. You want a fast distro, with doesn't take up much room, and is
compatible with the 486 processer. You want something you can customise
a lot, to remove unneeded clutter.

How about LFS? That way, you can remove all the stuff you don't want,
and add a light gui with blackbox (maybe). The bonus is smaller, faster,
and 486 compatible.
