*seemed* to be the one thing that allowed me to boot, whereas before I
could not boot from /dev/hda. I just went back and experimented. I first
unmarked (toggled "boot" off) the root partition, and later marked an
incorrect partition as bootable. In both instances the machine booted (via
LILO) into Linux no prob. I must have had some other problem before, but
now I don't know what it was! Anyway, thanks for that.
