Stuff "not in Debian" is a bit of a problem. mplayer is not in debian
because of a spat between them and the developers, not an actual legal
issue AFAIK.
I have no problems using mplayer builds from http://marillat.free.fr/

Certainly mjpeg isn't the only video codec AVI can handle, you can
probably get quite good quality with transcode to xvid or something
similar.
I honestly do wish people would stop living in the past and using MPEG-1
etc and take advantage of the gain in space and quality with open but more
recent codecs (eg, xvid, which works really well with the AVI container
for decent quality content..)
But, playing on standalones (at 1 disc per hour) seems to be something
people have a real fetish about retaining..
