Get a real (no pun intended) NIC. I have used a 3COM 3C509B 10/100 NIC for
the last year or so and have never had problems.

I finally worked this out.

Word to the wise. It seems that Linux (specifically debian sarge) has
problems autonegotiating with Motorola modems. My system had no such
problems with the older com21. Using a realtek RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ NIC
(i.e. a DSE special)

setting the eth card to HD solved the problem. i.e mii-diag -F
10BaseT-FD

Maybe if the install tech had known to check that when he installed, he
could have saved us all some time...
