Really? I have never had any problems with RTL-8139 cards and my 
Motorola cable modem. Currently I'm using a VIA Rhine chipset, but I had 
a RTL-8139 ($18 from DSE at the time) running with autodetection and no 
problems whatsoever...

Then again, when I got my cable modem installed it was going to a MacOS 
X machine, the tech just gave me the details :P
