But how would it know? umount tells the kernel to unmount the volume, 
it doesn't tell anything else about its intentions. The kernel then 
checks to see if any files/directories are open on that volume, and if 
they are it denies the unmount. Nowhere does it tell any application to 
stop using the files, so it is just not possible for FAM or Nautilus to 
close the files.

As for mount, that's just easy. Monitor the mountpoints. They don't get 
any notification of mounts, they just check the mountpoints for 
changes.
