The man page is definitely your friend in this instance :-).  bzip2
_may_ allow undamaged blocks to be recovered (they don't guarantee it)
when corruption occurs, unlike gzip.  Recovery works best with larger
files and/or a smaller block size.  A smaller block size reduces
compression though.
