Me - that is

all my encryption/decryption issues were related to no owner write directory
permissions on the odd directory - (some of the windows permissions must get
sent through when rsyncing to a linux box?).

fixed it with: find $DATADIR -type d -exec chmod 700 {} ';'

thanks to all for your help over the weekend. I learnt a lot (and swore a
lot)
a lot of the suggestions are finding their way into the final backup script.
