No, I guess that's another option - if I can find the details.

I thought I'd try flashing the bios as the most likely of Brent's
suggestions, but man what a PITA - signing up to driver guide to
download the image/flash util, then downloading a freedos disk image
only to discover my fdd doesn't work. I'm now playing with a freedos CD,
but then I need a DOS filesystem somewhere to get the BIOS stuff from.
If that doesn't work, I guess I'll see if I can find another floppy
drive ...

I'm also compiling a new kernel, but that box is still only a PII 400,
so it takes a while.

Oh, and with all the stuffing around to get the fdd going (it wasn't
even plugged in to start with), I had some moments when it wouldn't boot
at all, so there may be other hardware problems.
