Kernel only, actually. The root filesystem can be on any disk the kernel
can find on boot automatically, ie before it fires up init. It's entirely
possible to put /boot on your small disk, and put / on the big unknown
disk.

I wasn't suggesting booting the invisble disk from LILO/GRUB, rather
letting the kernel find the big disk during pre-init.
