i just answered the question you asked.. :)

HFS is the filesystem used by Apple on most older macs, while on newer 
Macs they use HFS+, which older macs can't read.

With the appropriate kernel support, Linux machines can read and write 
HFS and HFS+ without problems (though i have noticed some strange 
permission issues mounting my HFS+ iPod under Linux..)

HFS is interesting because it separates files and meta-data into 
different 'forks'  - one of which holds the actual data and the other 
which holds stuff like the application associated with the file.

This causes issues with non resource-fork based systems, and is likely 
what you are running into trying to get your mpegs to play.

a google search will give you more information on HFS than i can be 
bothered typing out right now however.
