Hi,

You could try a newer version of Mandrake (10.1), but, the main problem sounds 
like it's having trouble writing to the boot section (assuming you've got 
past the stage where it installs packages).   Have you got any virus 
protection turned on, or protection setup in BIOS that might be affecting 
this?

I would expect that you should just pick first sector of the MBR and it would 
install, as I've never run into difficulties.
