Yep, what I worked out too.....

I have considered this as an option before, but lacked "hard wired" partners in crime.
I have read http://www.usbwifi.orcon.net.nz/ and a few other local initiatives (can't recall exactly, but there was a DIY community broadband in Welly basically running twisted pair over your fence to your neighbours...)

BTW Thanks for all the feedback so far.  The prospect of giving up cable is like relinquishing my right nut :(
