For the most part, I think you are right -- it's just an exercise in
intellectual curiosity.

However, it's of at least some practical use if you have a system with
extremely limited resources, if you want to minimise what is installed
for other (e.g. security) reasons, or if you just can't be faffed
installing mysql/postgres/perl modules (I fit the third category).

Just out of interest, if I were the owner of said tap-dancing
elephant, would it count as practical use if I could make a lot of
money charging people to watch? :-)
