Sounds like you need Microsoft Exchange! :-)
Seriously, I know that Exchange is one monolithic
mother of an application, and that Linux apps need not
be so huge and bug-prone, but my experience of
Exchange is that the database got corrupted not
infrequently.
Restoring a borked binary database is slightly more
difficult than fixing a borked write to a plaintext
mbox file!
Still, if you want to do it (and you wouldn't have
asked if you didn't) I would make sure you back up
that database regularly.
