I had a similar problem with mandrake storm linux and caldera with the DSE
optical scroll mouse using the usb connector. However it comes with a PS2
adaptor and when I ran that using the PS2 port it worked OK but not so
reliably in caldera linux but finein mandrake. (You didn't say whether you
used the ps2 adaptor or the usb plug.) I also found that when using a
Partition Magic boot disk from boot in windows it failed to recognise the
DSE opt mouse in usb and only sometimes it worked in ps2 but not always
reliably. It runs perfectly well in windows. DSE on their website say it
supports both linux and windows and that's what they told me at the counter
when I bought it. but I couldn't get a linux usb driver for it so what DSE
say about it running in both is bullshit. I only use the dse mouse in m$ now
and a ball scroll ps2 mouse in linux. I can't suggest an optical mouse but
only stay away from the dse one if you want one for linux.
