From my experience, the answer is no, to run direct x games, get a copy of 
winex from www.transgaming.com (costs $15 US for 3 months of the binary 
download and support).   Many Direct X games do work under winex.

I use vmware on a pretty high spec workstation, and regardless of spec, have 
tried the games, and it pops up a message saying direct X is not available..
