Here's an idea. 1x writing speed is actually twice the normal  playback 
speed. If a standard 4.7GB disk plays ffor 2hrs, that is about 
0.65MB/sec. 1x writing speed is 1.3M/sec. So it may be that when you say 
speed=2, you are requesting  2.6MB/sec, which is 4x playback speed, and 
the drive is reporting that..
