not using RH myself but here's a link to rpm's for the latest version of
mplayer (can also download additional codecs from here).

This won't create the plugin for your browser though so you will need to
check out the plugins section on this page:

When it comes to extracting tar.gz or tar.bz2 files an easy way if you
can't remember the command line options is to use MidnightCommander (mc
in a terminal) then highlight file and press f2 and choose extract from
the menu.
