Last time I tried firefox it used exactly the same amount of ram as the
current Mozilla at the time (1.6, I believe) and ran only slightly
faster on my laptop at significant feature cost... I'd rather stick with
the real thing :)

What programs?  Just one or two, or many?  How much swap space do you
have?  If the kernel is killing processes due to lack of memory, then
running dmesg will tell you.  It'd look something like:

Out of Memory: Killed process 412 (mysqld). 
Out of Memory: Killed process 422 (mysqld). 
Out of Memory: Killed process 524 (apache). 
Out of Memory: Killed process 525 (apache).
