I think that's the case - if you load up a nice lean X session (maybe with
fluxbox) with an X background *different* to what you're using with Gnome
and then run 'nautilus' you'll watch your X background disappear and be
replaced with Nautilus's's's's's. Now try setting X's background and
you'll see it doesn't appear to work. Kill Nautilus and there's your X
background (if you tried changing it - otherwise it's whatever Nautilus
was using I think).

Now, I don't use Gnome, but I know it starts Nautilus up automatically.
You can start nautilus manually with --no-desktop to avoid it managing the
desktop.

That's my understanding anyway.
