there have.
cubic even.
NeXT Cube, Cobalt Qube, Apple had one too. i have also seen regular pc
cases in cubic format. (more room for drives)

apart from that, many unix workstations had a square pizza-box format.
(sparc, indy, rs/6000, ...)

most laptop boxes that i saw are fatter than the box a normal tower case
comes in. makes sense though. the laptops have a lot more value and thus
should get better padding.
