FYI

Benchmarking a nice multi CPU Sun workstation used for number crunching
numerical models & comparing it with a desktop Shuttle running an Athlon XP2600
cpu & Linux (which has been to a few meetings & rolled around the ocean a bit):

Shuttle: about 70% at the ROMS meterorolgical modelling benchmark. Both boxes
faster than a Cray T3E at this benchmark (it doesn't parallelise well). Given
the Shuttle is now on kernel 2.6 it should be slightly faster than before (on
2.4). An XP3200 cpu with a synchronous DDR400 FSB would also narrow the gap.

Of course other benchmarks will vary, but I'm partial to this one :-)

If you want some nice hardware to play with, I'm gonna take a new mortgage when
this little toy comes out :-)

Also note that AMD just unveiled their A64 3800+ cpu on 1 June, for those who
want just a bit of grunt & only 1 cpu.

The faster x86 cpus are rolling the traditional 64bit RISC systems. Faster &
cheaper boxes.

Cheers,

  Brent
