Are you sure that CD-ROM drive is okay? The kernel is
certainly detecting the drive, but it seems to be
choking setting it up.
Can you check the drive by putting in another machine?
Or putting another, known-good, drive on the same
cable?
Also, in the newer 2.4 kernels (probably 2.6 too),
there is a configuration option to enable DMA if
available (somewhere under an IDE ATA option). My
experience is that turning it OFF removed status=0x51
errors on an old laptop.
It's a long-shot, but it shouldn't hurt to check.
