Thanks Andrej.  I tried that -- no joy.  I also tried
messing with the PAM settings for cron, but cron
doesn't seem to support the pam_group.so library at
all.

Using sudo is a possibility, since root certainly has
access to /dev/dsp, but I'd prefer not to go granting
root willy-nilly.
