[wellylug] new hard disk problems

Hi
I don't have an identical (celeron) box but I will try an amd equivalent
(same ide chipset) over the weekend.
A similar 200 gig drive is working fine on an older via chipset. If there is
no software fix I will have to swap hardware around until I prove if its the
motherboard/drive or this particular combination of the two. Ah the joys
....

thanks

Mark

Mark

Have you tried swaping the drive for another one using the same hardware /
software (eg: cables / motherboard etc) setup?

See if that does anything.

Michael

OK

kernel is generic debian 2.6 (kernel-image-2.6.6-1-686)
chipset is VIA VT8235 on a msi P4MAM board
(this is same controller as on another amd system I built with new 120gb
drive which gives no problems)
drive is only drive in system (hda)
cable is normal (new) type for udma 66/100 controllers
(now that you mention it I will replace this cable - just in case)

drive is seagate 200gb:
ds2:/# hdparm -i /dev/hda
/dev/hda:

 Model=ST3200822A, FwRev=3.01, SerialNo=3LJ0WS26

 DMA modes:  mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
 UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 *udma4 udma5
 AdvancedPM=no WriteCache=enabled
 Drive conforms to: ATA/ATAPI-6 T13 1410D revision 2:

drive settings:
ds2:/# hdparm -v /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 multcount    =  0 (off)
 IO_support   =  1 (32-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  1 (on)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    = 256 (on)
 geometry     = 24321/255/63, sectors = 390721968, start = 0

The dma is on at the moment while I try in vain to fix it :)

thanks for responding

cheers

Mark

What IDE Chipset have you got, is the kernel
(whichever number) optimised for it? Do you have
more than one IDE device hooked up, if so, are
they the same standard? The cable you're using,
is it suitable for the drive?
