Newer packages, but still (despite the name)
reasonably reliable and gets security fixes.

Yes.  For example, there is no anti-aliasing in
Mozilla, CUPS drivers will not work with many printers
and the latest available kernel is 2.4.19.

Having said that, with the stable distribution, you
always have the option of using backports
(www.backports.org) to get more recent versions of
some packages without having to update dependencies. 
In this way, I run Debian stable, but use OpenOffice
1.1.1, Mozilla 6.0+ and a 2.4.25 kernel (2.6.x is
possible too).
