An update for those who took the time to respond
Nothing other than disabling dma got rid of the problem -

however replacing the motherboard did fix it. I will test the original
motherboard with another disk when I get time.

Yeah, but they are not part of the "kernel-source", are they? There's
certainly a seperate headers package, although now I come to think
about it it may be pulled in by installing the kernel-source package.
