Personally I haven't had any issues with Seagate, but my brother lost two
(both 60gig) within 18 months. It highlighted a gotcha with NZ consumer
warranty law that we weren't aware of at the time - any replacement is
covered under the original warranty only, so if the first disk has a
12-month warranty and fails just before 12 months, and the replacement
fails a month later, there's no warranty cover unless you send it to
Seagate directly. This happened to him and he decided it wasn't worth
paying to ship it there and back. There's that small issue of 'reasonable
use' which he could have contested (arguing that 13 months isn't
'reasonable use' of a HDD) but in the end he bit the bullet and bought a
Samsung with a 3 year warranty.
Based on his experience I'm reluctant to buy Seagate in future. Maybe he
got unlucky, but what else do I have to go on?
Is there an issue with Western Digital?
