You're quite right.  I was typing in the wrong window!  That message was
what you get when you connect to ftp.nz.debian.org from a machine in the
USA.  My mistake.

Just changed my apt sources again and it looks like I can connect to
ftp.nz.debian.org again.  (I'm on Ihug.)
