I believe I can help with the keyboard. :D
xhkeys, enough said.
It is *the* best program I've found for the extra keys so far, author is 
friendly too. It's only downside that I've found is that it only works while 
you're in X.

Feel free to browse the manual that comes with it but it's rather simple really.
./xhkconf
<press key or key combo>
Choose how to assign it(manual for details)
Option 2 lets you assign a command to happen when the key is pressed. I have it 
setup for controling xmms. Volume controls working, all the other keys too.

Once you're finished, ./xhkeys :)
Of course you can put both programs in your PATH if you like.

A thing to note is that having numlonk on or off may effect the key.
