IIRC the reason it's used is that it compresses better than MPEG1/2/4,
etc. It's unfortunate that the videos are only available for streaming
though -- they'd be easier to play on non-Windows systems if they could
be downloaded. (And easier for people like who'd like to do
"sneakernet" rather than using up all our cable bandwidth.)

It takes a wee while to connect (at least at present), but will then
play the stream. It appears that mplayer might play the RTSP stream
as well if it had some extra libraries installed (LIVE.COM libraries
which I don't have).
It would, however, be easier if it were possible to download the full
file at once, eg, via HTTP. But they'll be fairly big files.
