I was having these problems with disk 1 of Mandrake 10 that I got from
LinuxShop.
I noticed that the disk only had read errors on one of my machines --- the
older one. I copied it on the newer machine (that has a DVD/CDwriter rather
than just a CD drive) and reburnt it (at a slow speed - x4), and then it
worked fine. Disks 2-4 were all good - didn't need to reburn.
If you want I can burn you a copy of the first disk of 10...
