[wellylug] samba workgroup name length requirement

Hello,

I have just replaced my RH9 installation with a new Debian-based distro
called MEPIS.
http://www.mepis.org
More on my installation adventures in another post, perhaps.

Anyway, it uses a graphical install program to set up various things,
including your samba setup (seems to be linked to komba2?). I have another
Win2k/Linux dual boot machine on my home LAN. I have successfully used a
3-letter long workgroup name in the past, but the MEPIS installation
program insisted on having both a Domain name and a Workgroup name, and
both had to be at least 4 letters long, otherwise it wouldn't proceed. I
complied with a longer name.

I thought I could just edit my smb.conf, change back to the old name and
restart samba, but the longer name is apparently still in some other config
file somewhere that I just can't find, even after re-boots. komba2 is now
showing both workgroups.

My question is, does anyone know anything about this longer workgroup name
requirement, and should I just switch all machines to a longer name? I was
wondering if it might be a new M$ thing. I've looked in man pages and on
Google, with no luck. This komba2 thing reminds of why I quickly gave up on
SWAT, and stuck to manually editing my smb.conf files.
