I sent a similarly themed patch about October last year, and got no
response, but I wasn't that supprised. I'm not sure I see the value to bug
the man, unless he's indicated he doesn't think it's a common problem vs a
solvable issue with the scanner.

FWIW, I had similar problems of getting progress on trying to work out why
my board refuses to provide stereo over the /dev/dsp the driver
creates. I've gone as far as walking most of the audio parts of the driver
with a copy of the full datasheet (although, an early release, so who
knows if it's still accurate for the current shipping silicon), and I
couldn't see a problem with the code :(

But I swear I don't get stereo over /dev/dsp :(
