[wellylug] Configuring a modem

Hi all, I'm a new WellyLUG member, with an old question - how do I configure
my winmodem under Linux? I'm running Fedora Core at the moment, and the
modem chipset is MD5628D-L-C - it's the 56k internal modem that Dick Smith
Electronics is currently selling for $34.
Now I'm going to head off your immediate responses of "get a hardware
modem", "go external", "56k? you need DSL" and most importantly "winmodem
sounds suspiciously like Windows - we don't go in for that kind of thing
around here" by telling you I know the arguments, but I know this can work -
it's become an obsession. I've found lots of internet threads that end with
"OK, I got it to work, thanks" without telling how they did it.
The driver that comes with the modem seems to install properly when I follow
the instructions, but the modem will not connect - more importantly in my
mind, it won't auto-detect, which I think must be the first step in making
the thing work properly.
One avenue I've been trying to follow up is that the driver is for kernel
2.4.x - am I right in thinking the Fedora Core 1 runs kernel 2.6.0? Does
anyone know how to recompile the driver for 2.6.0? How do I find out what
kernel I'm using?
Any and all help is appreciated,

   Nick
