Ah, no.  Domain name resolvers haven't worked that way since the
early 90s.  See http://rfc1535.x42.com/ and man host(1) for more details.

Basically, since BIND 4.9 (~ 1993), names with a '.' are resolved without
the search list first, and only then resolved via the search list.
