Thanks for that suggestion. As it turns out (blush), I had a crosslink
cable (not labelled as such) plugged into my hub's uplink plug (which I
didn't know existed until I crawled around with a flashlight and looked)
plugged into the Linux laptop, which would explain its bizarre behaviour.
If I'd plugged it into another plug it wouldn't have worked at all, which
would have been better in this case. Sorry for wasting people's time, but I
did gain some very useful tips from Sam on the dhcp and Samba setup.
