In the Minicom options, make sure flow control is disabled.

I've scratched my head over the same thing when using minicom as a
serial terminal on my sparcs :)

When I run minicom is says 'Initialising Modem' then does nothing. The 
hyperterminal instructions says to press return a couple of times but
that 
isn't working either. I'm baffled.
